“Boy Without a Flag”

Posted in Book Talk by Tajh Ray on September 24, 2009

In the story “Boy Without a Flag” a boy is determined to be free. Intellegent for his age and able to do things others can’t he tries to stand up for what others wouln’t. In his mind he was doing a very couragious thing to others it was very foolish. People called him crazy people said he was good for nothing. But with determination he decided to stand up for somethin he believed in! The boy was forced to spend a total of 4 hours facing a wall because he did not want to salute the American flag. A puerto rican who felt out of place full of confusion as to why people cared if he did not salute their flag. With a great lesson to learn the boy must find out on his own how to get others to stand up for their religion and be free. With a great tallent for writing it’s almost impossible that thig guy won’t let his message be heard.
The flag in the story represent freedom to the boy. He believes that he should not be forced to salute a flag that is not of his own religion. The story says that America is a free country, and just because you are from a different country you are free in America and have right you normally wouldn’t. Therefore you should salute the flag.
If i were in the boys shoes i would have saluted the flag because i would be standing up for something that i believe in. I believe you are free in America, and that we have much more then other countries don’t. We take many things for granted and need to be grateful for what we have today.
If i were to meet the boy today i would tell him that he could still practice his religious beliefs and salute his flag all he wanted but, also i would tell him that just because he is from a different country does not mean that he could not salute another countries flag as well.
The boy is a good American he is just learning from his mistakes as any human would. All he needs is a good lesson on what freedom really is and i am sure he would see it through. For example in the story the boy is talking to a charecter in the story, Miss. Collon says that she is also an american and salute the flag because she is free.
I think the narrator could have read up and studied what he did more before he went at the situation the way he did. That would have saved him a lot of trouble in the long run. And he would get a good lesson on what freedom truely is.
He himself had an American dream to become a great writer. At a young age he was already writing novels, comic books, plays and more.
I thought the story was very amusing. What stood out most was that the teachers were having a wird affair.

i liked your post on the boy without a flag you wrote alot and i liked the part the most when you said that Americans need to salute the flag. because afterall we are living in american at least we can show respect by holding out our hand to our hearts and sing to the flag because in American were pretty lucky unlike other country’s were theres poverty and other issues going around this country is free and has a lot of opurtunitys we can make if we choose them.

Nice work about your paragraphs. I do agree with you about the little boy Abraham that he is a very smart boy at his age. At the end Abraham felt he did the wrong thing but actually he still needs to learn his rights for not standing up to salute the flag.
